A: Nice try—NO! In case all you sun worshipers haven’t noticed, your skin doesn’t look so good—and just FYI, fixing it isn’t cheap or quick.

Your skin remembers everything you do to it, and paybacks can be wicked!

Exposure to UV radiation, whether from sunlight or tanning beds not only damages your skin but also significantly increases your risk of skin cancer.

High SPF alone is not enough to protect from UV-induced cell damage. Use an SPF of at least 30 that blocks UVA and UVB, wear protective clothing, and avoid midday sun when possible.

If you already have skin damage from too much sun exposure, there are treatments & skin care products that promote healing of your skin. For more information and a free skin health consultation, please call us at 918-587-7546. Visit our website at www.skinmedic.com for updates & information on skin health & age management issues!

Experts also found that all types of ultraviolet radiation caused worrying mutations in mice, proof the radiation is carcinogenic. Previously, only one type of ultraviolet radiation was thought to be lethal.

The research was published online in the medical journal Lancet Oncology recently, by experts at the International Agency for Research on Cancer in Lyon, the cancer arm of the World Health Organization.

“People need to be reminded of the risks of sunbeds,” said Vincent Cogliano, one of the cancer researchers. “We hope the prevailing culture will change so teens don’t think they need to use sunbeds to get a tan.”

Most lights used in tanning beds give off mainly ultraviolet radiation, which cause skin and eye cancer, according to the International Agency for Cancer Research. Cogliano cautioned that ultravoilet radiation is not healthy, whether it comes from a tanning bed or from the sun.

There are a number of shaving hints to make the process better :

1) Wait 30 minutes after getting up in the morning so that facial muscles tighten and whiskers stand up,

2) Apply a warm wash cloth to soften hair,

3) Apply shaving cream and massage it well,

4) Shave in this order: jaw & cheeks, in towards lips, neck and chin. Don’t go over the same area multiple times.

5) With a cool cloth rinse your face, clean your razor, moisturize, and apply sunblock. Exfoliate your skin twice weekly for the best results.

Spider veins and redness can result from genetics, too much sun, or skin disorders. Many people also have “brown spots” as well. One of the most effective treatments for these problems is IPL (Intense Pulsed Light), also known as Photofacial. IPL eliminates the spider veins and skin discoloration without harming the skin and typically also reduces pore size, and tightens the skin in 5 or 6 treatments.

Looking good & feeling good goes hand-in-hand—where does Vitamin D3 fit in?

Studies have shown that the skin can produce about 10,000IU of vitamin D a day with moderate sun exposure, a much higher dosage than recommended by USDA. More recent studies have found low D levels are associated with higher rates of MS. Benefits of D includes calming the immune system, preventing a number of cancers and decreases risks of developing MS and osteoporosis. The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition demonstrated that only vitamin D-3 was effective. The RDA dose of 400IU is far too low. New recommendations are from 2,000 to 5,000IU a day.
